Lien Choong Luen (???), a passionate adventurer, will be giving a talk to the public on 30 July 2010 to share his experience of climbing Mount Everest. Chronicling his determination and steadfastness in his ascent of the world¡¯s tallest mountain, the talk will showcase his determination and steadfastness in reaching the peak, the same traits his grandfather, Lien Shih Sheng (???), one of Singapore’s most influential Chinese authors from the 1950s, ossessed when he made his way from China to Singapore in search of a better future.
The talk will held in conjunction with the final round of Lien Shih Sheng Youth Chinese Essay Competition 2010 (?????????????) organised by the Lien Shih Sheng Youth Chinese Literature Endowment Fund (??????????) together with Confucius Institute, NTU (??????????). In its fourth year now, the essay competition hopes to motivate more young people to excel in their mother tongue, and nurture that interest as they mature.
About Speaker:
An active outdoors sportsman, Lien Choong Luen has been actively involved in various outdoor activities. These include marathons (e.g. Ironman Triathlon and Gobi Desert Ultra Marathon), adventure racing, freefall parachuting and mountaineering. Besides his recent conquest of Mount Everest, he has also scaled the heights of Mt Cook and Aconcagua, the tallest mountains in New Zealand and South America respectively.
