Shopping and shops are pervasive components of contemporary life. The activity may be a duty or a pleasure, a necessity or a passion. This presentation will be built on trends discovered by a James Cook University research team on shopping villages in Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. The studies have looked at environmental settings, retailers and customers as well as considering the role of promotion bodies and governments. The work has been undertaken over a 5 year period and more than 60 distinct shopping environments have been researched. The work has resulted in a book due to be published in late 2010 or early 2011 and the presentation at JCU-S anticipates some of the material to be released in that volume. The presentation will consider the ways in which the large scale forces operating in the global market place are changing the face of shopping; the discussion highlights how people are changing, the passions people have for shopping and how shopping must adapt and anticipate these changes to be profitable. The presentation will be illustrated by examples of the shopping trends drawn from several settings and some implications for the future of shopping in Singapore will be suggested.
